Lviv Organ Hall: the Baroque façade of the former St Mary Magdalene Church with two towers

Lviv Organ Hall occupies the former Church of St Mary Magdalene at 8 Stepana Bandery Street. Today it is home to the Lviv Academic House of Organ and Chamber Music. According to the hall, its organ is the largest in Ukraine: after the fernwerk was restored in 2026, it has 5,236 pipes.

Concerts take place in the evening, while during the day you can visit the gallery or climb the tower. Below you will find the building’s history, what makes the instrument special, prices, box office hours and tips for a first visit.

Where Is Lviv Organ Hall?

The address is 8 Stepana Bandery Street. The church stands next to the main building of Lviv Polytechnic, just outside the Old Town. From Rynok Square or the Opera House it takes about 20 minutes on foot.

There are steps at the entrance to the concert hall. If you need assistance, the hall recommends calling in advance: +38 (098) 871-01-80.

History: from a Dominican Church to a Concert Hall

The Church of St Mary Magdalene was built at the beginning of the 17th century for Dominican friars, outside the city fortifications at the time. In 1754–1758 the architect Marcin Urbanik rebuilt it, changing the façades and adding the towers.

In the 1780s, under Austrian rule, the monastery was turned into a women’s prison. It operated until 1922, while the church served as a parish church. In the 20th century the Dominican complex became part of Lviv Polytechnic, and in the 1920s it was thoroughly reconstructed.

In Soviet times the church housed a gym. Later the building was adapted as the organ hall of the Lviv Conservatory, and the House of Organ and Chamber Music opened in 1988.

The Rieger Organ: the Largest Instrument in Ukraine

In 1932 the company Gebrüder Rieger installed an organ that was powerful for its time. It was inaugurated on 4 June 1933. In 1968 the Czech firm Rieger-Kloss restored the instrument, giving it 60 stops, 4,560 pipes and a new three-manual console.

A special feature of the Lviv organ is its fernwerk, a separate 8-stop organ at the opposite end of the hall. Thanks to it, music can come from both sides of the room. In 2026 the hall restored the fernwerk (494 pipes), bringing the total to 5,236 pipes.

The Interior and the Murals by Jan Henryk Rosen

The hall is bright, with a high vaulted ceiling and pilasters topped by gilded capitals. Listeners sit on wooden benches, and the silver pipes of the organ rise above the stage. The hall seats about 400 people.

In 2019 murals by Jan Henryk Rosen, a renowned early 20th-century painter, were discovered in the church. They are dated to 1931.

Concerts at the Organ Hall

The programme goes well beyond organ music. Chamber ensembles, choirs and orchestras perform here, and there are events for children. According to lviv.travel, in some months the hall offers 30 to 40 concerts.

The tower is open daily from 13:00 to 18:00, and tickets are sold at the box office. The climb follows steep stairs in a narrow space. If many steps are difficult for you, the hall and the gallery are a better choice.

The Façade and Its Sculptures

The Baroque façade with its two towers is easy to see from Bandery Street. Look up: stone statues of saints stand in the niches and on the cornices. According to reference sources, the statues of St Dominic and St Hyacinth were made for the façade by the sculptor Sebastian Fesinger before 1764.
