The Church of St. John the Baptist in Lviv is one of the oldest churches in the city, standing on the Old Market below Castle Hill. Its origins are still wrapped in legend, and today it houses a museum of Lviv’s oldest monuments.

The small stone church with a bell tower is easy to miss, yet this is where you can see what Lviv was like in princely and early royal times. Here is the history of the church, what to see inside and how to visit.

Where Is the Church

The church is at 1 Uzhhorodska Street, on Old Market Square in the Pidzamche district, at the foot of Castle Hill. It is a 10–15 minute walk from Rynok Square.

Paths up to High Castle Park start nearby, and a little further on is Znesinnia Park.

History of the Church

Legends of Princely Lviv

According to legend, the church may have been built in 1201 or linked to the wedding of Prince Lev Danylovych in 1247. The first written mention dates from 1371. Until the mid-14th century it stood at the centre of the Old Market, the city’s oldest trading place.

Rebuilding

The church was rebuilt many times, with repairs recorded in 1650, 1836, 1855 and 1869. Its biggest change came in the late 1880s, when the architect Julian Zachariewicz rebuilt it in the Neo-Romanesque style. In 1978–1984 Ivan Mohytych studied and restored the church, bringing back an older look.

Museum and Church

In Soviet times the building belonged to a neighbouring hospital. In 1993 a museum of Lviv’s oldest monuments opened here; today it is a branch of the Lviv National Gallery of Arts. Since 2009 Ukrainian Greek Catholic services have again been held here on Sundays and holidays.
