Home of Rescued Animals in Lviv: Foxes, Owls and Birds of Prey in Znesinnia Park

The Home of Rescued Animals (Domivka) is a charitable animal rescue centre in Lviv, inside Znesinnia Park. It takes in foxes, owls, birds of prey and other animals harmed by poachers, road accidents or cruelty. Some are treated and released back into the wild; others stay here for good.
According to the foundation, Domivka has been running for more than seven years and receives no state funding: it relies on donations and volunteers.
Where Is the Home of Rescued Animals?
The address is 24 Oleksy Dovbusha Street, in the western part of Znesinnia Park, and signposts in the park point the way. Mount Leva is close by, and High Castle Park is a little further.

Who Lives Here
Domivka started as a shelter for wild and farm animals and birds: foxes, raccoons, owls, hedgehogs, pheasants, goats, ducks, chickens and roe deer. After the full-scale invasion began, the foundation also started rescuing pets that were abandoned or harmed by the war. Animals now come from all over Ukraine; the foundation says it has saved more than 9,000 animals since the full-scale war began.
Visitors walk along paths between the enclosures. Foxes live in a large enclosure with logs and platforms, and there are separate enclosures for owls, birds of prey and poultry.

Why Not Every Animal Goes Back to the Wild
The main goal of rehabilitation is to return wild animals and birds to their natural habitat. Every rescued animal is treated, and birds then gradually regain their flying skills in special aviaries. Animals are released only once they have fully recovered and can live on their own.
That is not always possible. Some animals arrive with severe injuries from poaching, road accidents or human cruelty: they lose legs, wings or sight and can no longer hunt or fly. Others carry deep psychological trauma after years in captivity. These residents stay at Domivka under permanent care.

Raccoon Dogs
One enclosure is home to raccoon dogs. They are an invasive species, introduced to Ukraine by people; in the wild they live near forests, marshes and water and are mostly active at night. All of them were rescued from baiting stations where they were used in cruel training of hunting dogs. They cannot be released because of the species’ invasive status, their injuries and long life in captivity.
