Pohulianka Park in Lviv: Forest Park, Ponds and Walking Routes

Pohulianka Park in Lviv is a forest park of about 100 hectares in the city’s Lychakiv district. Beech, hornbeam and pine grow here, the Pasika stream runs through the park with a cascade of ponds, and long alleys wind between the hills. Pohulianka is protected as a botanical natural monument of local importance.
It is one of the quietest green spaces in Lviv: people come here to walk forest paths, go for a run or sit by the water away from the tourist centre.
Where Is Pohulianka?

The forest park lies in the Lychakiv district, between Pasichna, Vashynhtona and Zelena streets and the Pohulianka area. Its northern part borders the Botanical Garden of Lviv University. It is easy to get here from the city centre by public transport.
The History of Pohulianka
The history of the area goes back to the 15th century: its many springs made Pohulianka one of the city’s main sources of water. In the 17th century the land belonged to the city’s burgomasters and was known as Attelmayer’s Apiary.
In the early 19th century lawyer Franciszek Węgliński set up an estate here, and the area became known as “Węgliński’s Grove”. In 1821 it was bought by restaurateur Johann Distl, who planted a park. Later the land passed to Jan Klein, who built a brewery here.
Work on turning the area into a city park began in 1940, and a forest park design was developed in 1962.
What to See in the Park
The Pasika Stream and the Ponds

The central axis of the park is the Pasika stream, one of the sources of the Poltva river. Along the main alley it forms a cascade of ponds where ducks live. Benches line the water, so this is the most popular place to rest.
A Forest in the City

Unlike classic city parks, Pohulianka consists mostly of woodland. Beech, common hornbeam and pine dominate, with oak, maple, ash, birch, alder, spruce and metasequoia also growing here. In spring the slopes are covered with wood anemones.
Traces of the Past
The park still has a water collection structure built in 1839 and the remains of Jan Klein’s brewery. They are a reminder that Pohulianka was once not only a forest but also a place of leisure and business.
Alleys and Walking Routes

According to the municipal company Parky Lvova, the forest park has more than 14 km of alleys, about 8 km of which are lit in the evening. Wide paved alleys are suitable for pushchairs and bikes, while narrower dirt paths lead deeper into the woods and up the hills.
Pohulianka is popular with runners and dog owners, and on hot days the trees provide deep shade.
Pohulianka with Children

Children usually spend the most time by the ponds with ducks. The Centre for Children’s and Youth Creativity of Halychyna is located near the park.
